Finding a Used Honda Civic that Runs on Ethanol

The Honda Civic is one of the longest running car brands for a Japanese manufacturer in the United States. The Honda Civic is a line of subcompact and compacts cars, and is a popular line worldwide. Its first generation of Honda Civics were first introduced from 1973, while the latest eighth generation Honda Civics continue to be manufactured today.

With the increasing popularity of ethanol fuel, especially in the United States, owners and prospective buyers of a used Honda Civic may be curious about whether or not it is compatible with this new renewable fuel. Ethanol fuel is made from an alcohol that is distilled from fermented agricultural crops like corn, sugar cane and wheat. This alcohol is then blended with petrol in various levels of concentration.

According to the Honda website, it's important for Honda Civic owners to check inside their vehicle's fuel cap. There will be a sign there which indicates the kinds of fuel that your vehicle can use. However, ethanol production only began expanding in the United States from about the year 2000. Therefore, many of the older models of the Honda Civic may not have indications about the usage of ethanol fuel.

Fortunately, Honda provides some guidance by announcing that all 2003 models and any models later of the Honda Civic, the Honda Civic Hybrid, and the Honda Civic Type R may be operated using fuel containing up to 10% of ethanol (E10). The 2009 model and later models of the Honda Civic Si may also use E10.
